Budapest Dance Ensemble
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The artistic foundations and language of the theatrical adaptations performed by the Budapest Dance Company are rooted in the original peasant music and dance culture of Hungary. The Company's primary aim is to preserve and cultivate our folk traditions by adapting its folk motives to modern dance theatre productions. Throughout the year, the choreographers and composers creating these productions have been consistent in representing their individual perception, and have thus made a significantly contribution to Hungarian theatrical dance art.

The Budapest Dance Ensemble was formed in 1958. Zoltán Zsuráfszki has been artistic director of the ensemble since 1991.

In 2001, the company was structurally integrated into the Honvéd Ensemble. The Budapest Dance Ensemble retained however its artistic freedom and objectives: the preservation, interpretation and stage adaptation of the Hungarian folklore.

The ensemble gives approximately 80 performances every year and is a frequent guest of foreign cultural events. Most noted foreign appearances include the 1995 Japan tour, the 2000 and 2005 'Grand Tour' of the US (organized by Columbia Artists). This latter scheduled 29 performances in 6 weeks in various large cities of the US - the show named "Czardas! the tango of the East" was seen by some 32.000 spectators in all. A guest performance in Mexico City in 2003 was also a memorable event: the ensemble gave 15 performances in three weeks.
