Gázsa Ensemble

The group of six musicians was founded in 1958 as part of the Budapest Dance Theatre. Their current formation has been playing together for over 10 years now representing a very particular genre.

The ensemble researches and collects the traditions of folk music and plays it in a most authentic way. Their repertoire represents the richness and colourfulness of folk music in the Carpathian Basin.

Yet, their members do not only gather melodies of the old Hungary and Transylvania, they are also dedicated to keeping the virtuosity and dynamism of village musicians and gipsy musicians

The leader of the group is István Papp Gázsa was born in Kolozsvár (Cluj). Their dulcimer player, Kálmán Balogh is deservedly regarded as one of the best in the world.

The orchestra enjoys a worldwide success. They have given concerts in Italy, Japan, Mexico and for the third time in the United States arranged by Columbia Artists.
